How to Create a Passion Project That's Authentic to You and Attractive to Clients
This workshop has ended!
A GREAT PROJECT STARTS WITH A GREAT IDEA
✦ Find inspiration hiding in your everyday life so you never run out of project ideas (plus have the tools to filter through them to avoid overwhelm)
✦ Learn how to showcase your skills for potential clients, make an impact in your community, and re-ignite your creative spark with work you love to do
✦ Access new levels of creative confidence by making what matters to you - not just what you think others want to see
"Working with Lauren is such an invaluable experience! She gives so much amazing, doable advice and completely reframed my thinking on what work I needed to make [to get hired]. I’ve gained so much more confidence in myself and I have a much better idea of what kind of content to make for my brand."
(No really, turn to page 380 of the newest Graphic Artists Guild Pricing & Ethical Guidelines Handbook, and you'll see me there.)
Hey, I'm Lauren! I'm a commercial lettering artist and designer who loves helping creative people make work that gets them excited AND gets them hired. I've worked with clients like Google, Vans, Refinery29, Target and more... but before I worked with those big names, I was a recent art-school grad working full-time at an advertising agency, struggling to find fulfillment in the work I was doing.
I created my first-ever passion project, a lettering series called Daily Dishonesty, after a drunk joke one evening with a friend in 2012. Imagine my surprise when it went totally viral and turned into a five-figure book deal! That project ended up giving me the confidence, audience, and cash I needed to quit my job and start my own freelance business.
Since then, I’ve created 10+ passion projects similarly based on inspiration from my daily life. Some have gone viral and some haven’t, but all of them have helped me make authentic connections, stay excited about my work, and build a sustainable career. And they’re not as complicated or hard as you might think 😊
AN INTENTIONAL PROJECT IDEA CAN LEAD TO:
✦ A huge boost in your confidence and a deeper knowledge of yourself as an artist and person
✦ The need to get a stronger door (thanks to all the opportunities knocking on it lol)
✦ Brand new creative friends who “get it” and want to geek out on the same things as you
✦ Increased eyes on your work... that lead to more followers and client inquiries
✦ The unparalleled feeling of finally producing work that feels authentic to who you are today
✦ The fun, freedom, and creative impact that had you fall in love with art in the first place
BUT DON’T JUST TAKE IT FROM ME…
"I was having such a hard time narrowing down my interests and finding ideas for creative projects. There were so many things I wanted to work on!! Lauren’s class gave me structure and focus. I have so much more confidence in what I do and my ability to get paid work."
"I was feeling very discouraged about getting paid for my art because I kept attracting the wrong clients. All of my ideas for passion projects fell flat because I was doing what I thought I should do, not what I wanted to do. Lauren helped me realize I actually have so many untapped ideas - it felt like a slap in the face, in a good way!"
"I was never good at personal projects. I would have an idea, get excited, then quickly get overwhelmed and not know where or how to start. What I loved about Lauren’s class was how practical it was! My greatest takeaway was not the project itself, but the process of creating a personal project from start to finish."
READY TO FIND THAT CREATIVE SWEET SPOT WITH YOUR PERSONAL WORK? I'D LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE.
✦ I can't watch it live. Will there be a replay available?
Yes, the replay will be available to watch within three hours of the live broadcast. Closed captioning will be added within 24 hours. Everyone who signs up will have access to the replay through the end of July.
✦ Heeeeeyyyyy wait, is this free workshop a sneak attack to try and sell me something?
Lol it can't be a sneak attack if I'm transparent up front now, can it? Yeah, at the END of the lesson I'm going to spend like 3 minutes telling you about an online class I teach because it's a great next step for anyone who feels pumped after watching the free workshop. If at any time you're not into it, you can exit the room and live your life.
HOWEVER, if you're trying to make a living from your creative work but sales and marketing make you uncomfortable, I'd actually encourage you to stay through the end. Selling is a vital part of running any business, and it's a skill you'll need to practice. For me, the first step towards getting more comfortable with selling was watching other people do it without falling apart like a Nature Valley granola bar (like I thought I would). The helpful reframing I teach my sales-averse students is this: "What if instead of selling, you were simply telling?".
I'll leave you with this final analogy: Think about how the free sample carts at Costco always have samples AND the full-size products to purchase on the table if you end up liking them. This workshop is the free sample. And yes, you can come back for seconds (AKA watch it as many times as you like during the replay window).
